Outrage after community garden for disabled in Ballymena targeted for third time

Co Antrim residents have been left outraged after a community garden was damaged for the third time in a number of months.

The Base Community Garden in Ballymena was set up for the benefit of local people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health issues.

The latest act of vandalism comes after the garden, based in Ballymena's People's Park, was targeted in an attack last month.

A spokesperson for CAN, a non-for-profit organisation, who works with those at the site said they were "disgusted" and "appalled" by the actions of the vandals.

"To "Higg", your name will stay on our shed in the blue spray paint but I hope whomever put it there is proud of their actions," they said.

"Feel free to help yourselves to any of the fruit vegetables or herbs growing in the garden but please, please, please stop destroying something that means so much to people who take great joy in this space and all it reprisents.

"For second time in a little under a month and the third time since the beginning of April the Base Community Garden in Ballymena 'Peoples Park has been vandalised."

They added: "The polytunnel was only replaced earlier this year after being set alight and totally destroyed late last year and now we find it being slashed.

"We will continue to leave the polytunnel and shed without locks as previously fitted ones were just ripped off, causing even more damage.

"Our Ballymena Base members start back in September and they will be devastated by this loss.

"Staff have worked hard to maintain the garden during this period so they can return to their activities."

Councillor Rodney Quigley added: "Sad to see that the community garden at the Peoples Park has once again been vandalised.

"There is no place in society for anyone who takes part in this sort of anti social behaviour and I condemn it outright.

"I would ask that if anyone has any information about who carried it out to contact the PSNI or myself."
