'Outpourings of regret over migrant tragedy not enough, France and UK must find solution'

So far this year, more than 25,000 people have risked their lives by crossing the English Channel.

The authorities were warned repeatedly that this would one day result in loss of life.

That tragedy has now come to pass.

What makes these deaths all the more heart-breaking is they could have been avoided.

This is not the first time we have witnessed the deadly price paid by migrants.

When three-year-old Alan Kurdi drowned on the shores of the Mediterranean in 2015 there were vows that this must never happen again.

The same promises were made when 39 Vietnamese suffocated to death in the sealed container of an articulated lorry in 2019.

There will be similar outpourings of regret this time. But that is not enough.

Everyone accepts there is no simple solution to solving the migrant crisis but it is clear that the efforts by the UK and French governments have been ineffective and inadequate.

They need to stop blaming each other, and start working together before more innocent people die.

Fans’ winner

Football is nothing without its fans.

In recent years many clubs have forgotten this basic fact by chasing money at the expense of long-standing supporters.

The long-awaited Government review into the sport sets out ways to put this right.

It recommends giving fans a greater say in the running of clubs, tightening the rules on ownership and more support for grassroots.

There are areas where the panel could have gone further but this is a welcome piece of work. The test now is whether the

Government will adopt its proposals.

Bargain boxer

Tyson Fury may have millions in the bank but he and his wife Paris cannot resist a bargain.

By snapping up tins of custard at a discount store they are clearly boxing clever when it comes to saving a few bob.
