Outlander work helping talented Wishaw make-up artist chase her dreams

A talented Wishaw make-up artist is making a name for herself working on one of the world’s most popular TV shows.

Former St Aidan’s High pupil Laura McGowan has been working on the set of the hugely successful Outlander as it shoots for its fifth season.

And the 32-year-old, who is close to finishing her HND in make-up artistry in Glasgow, is hoping the work will help her bag a dream job as a full-time artist to the stars.

“It all came about so suddenly,” Laura explained.

“I applied for the traineeship for the season and they ended up bringing me in daily to work on the big crowd and fight scenes.

“It’s been amazing and just so exciting to be involved in something so huge.

“It’s the biggest production I’ve ever been involved in by far and a real eye-opener.

“It’s cool to think so many people around the world might see our work.”

Laura is currently working on location in Scotland, but cannot reveal where due to the strict secrecy around filming of the show.

She is leaving home at 4am and doesn’t get back until 9pm, but is grateful to her “biggest fan” for helping her chase her dreams.

She said: “I’ve got two kids, Caleb, four, and Olivia, nine, and thankfully my mum Carol has been so supportive and helpful during these shifts.

“She’s always been really helpful and this work will definitely help me progress in the industry.

“It’s a massive asset on my CV for when I graduate in a few months time.”

Laura’s brand McMakeUp has also seen her nominated for the Creative Make Up Artist of the Year award at the upcoming Offical Makeup Awards.

She will head down to Manchester on May 26 for the ceremony with her mum and gran Ina, adding: “Everything has happened so fast.

“I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch but I know my mum and gran will go mad if I manage to win!”
