Outlander studio in Scots town sold to US firm with pledge of 'more investment'

The studio used for filming the Outlander series in Scotland has been sold to US investors.

Wardpark Studios, based in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire has been purchased by Hackman Capital Partners and Square Mile Capital Management. This comes after the company revealed plans to create London’s biggest film and TV studio last year and has just two acquired Ireland’s two biggest studios.

This news comes at an exciting time for the Scottish film and TV industry as more and more production companies are choosing to film in Scotland.

Wardpark CEO Terry Thomson said the deal will help "further establish" Scotland as one of the global hubs for the production of film and TV dramas.

He added: "The demand is unstoppable but we have to compete in a global market to attract inward productions. It is my intention to now expand our investments in the Scottish screen sector."

The studio boasts more than 200,000 square feet of studio space across a 14-acre campus, five sound stages, production offices, workshops and an external green screen.

Michael Hackman, founder of Hackman Capital Partners, said: “We’re thrilled to be adding Wardpark to our distinguished portfolio and excited to be entering the Scottish production market.

“Wardpark has been a strong catalyst for growth in the country’s creative sector and Scotland has become an important filming destination for international content creators, thanks in part to its lush landscape and scenery and competitive tax credits, as well as its top talent pool.”

The Wardpark staff will remain unchanged, according to a press release issued to announce the sale.

This is great news for Scotland as the country has been huge Hollywood productions being filmed in the country like Indiana Jones, The Batman and most recently Amazon Prime series Good Omens.

The highly anticipated sixth season of Outlander is set to air on March 6 2022 on Starz, while the popular series has already been renewed for a seventh season.
