Outlander star Sam Heughan finds mysterious sea creature in Scotland while filming Men In Kilts

Sam Heughan fans have been left baffled after the Edinburgh-born Outlander star discovered a mysterious sea creature while filming Men in Kilts.

During the making of his Scotland documentary, Sam picked up the flesh coloured blob while he was fishing and was horrified by his discovery.

The star took one look at the mystery creature before having to throw it back into the sea in disgust, declaring "Oh my god. What is that? that's disgusting. I'm not hungry anymore."

As Sam and the programme makers asked: "Any marine biologist fans want to weigh in on identifying this mystery creature?", fans took to social media to get to the bottom of the puzzle.

'What is that? That's disgusting' asks Sam Heughan on Starz Men in Kilts (Starz)

One wrote: "Ok... several of us wanna know what that brainy thing is that Sam Heughan threw back in the water...seriously what was it???"

Some thought the pink jelly sea animal was 'a blob fish' while another fan commented: ''Someone else said a geoduck, but I am not sure! The best answer I saw was a rare sea haggis...lol!"

Another viewer offered: "It's a clam. Sometimes they come out of the shell like that."

Fortunately for fans an expert weighed in on the debate and it was none other than Diana Gabaldon, the author of Outlander with a master of science in marine biology.

Diane wrote: 'It looks like a closed anemone."

And when one fan questioned her she added: "They open--with the long, streaming tentacles that make them look like flowers--when the tide comes in, bringing food. When the tide goes out, they draw in their tentacles and close, to avoid dehydration."
