Outlander star's hint about a death may lead to season 7 return to Scotland

While the returning season six of Outlander sees our favourite characters very much settling into their new home in America, fans of the show still hope that Scotland will once again feature at some point.

Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) travelled across the Atlantic to set up home at Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina and season six will see them face the coming Revolutionary War, as well as learning what the arrival of the Christie family to their encampment will bring.

However, and this is very much a *spoiler* so stop reading now if you don't want to learn what may happen in season 7, a recent interview with one of the actors from previous seasons has hinted at a possible return to Scotland.

The chat in Digital Spy with hugely popular Scots actor Steven Cree revealed that Jamie and Young Ian (John Bell) may receive some troubling news in season six that may see them wanting to go back home - at least for a little while.

Steven, who plays Ian Murray, is currently starring in A Discovery of Witches, hinted that he'd love to reprise his role in Outlander, adding that he had hoped to in season 5 but couldn't due to a filming clash with ADoW.

"I haven't been on Outlander for a while but the show has such a life outside of being in it," explained Steven. "It holds a really special place for me, so if they wanted me to take the job back I would definitely go back and do that."

"If the Outlander producers and the Outlander team wanted me to come back, I would absolutely go back."

He added that he knows what will likely happen to his character, if and when, he does return to the show.

The star joked that way back in 2014, one of the first things a fan told him at a convention was, "you know that you die by the way".

The Scots actor confirmed that he would be delighted to be given the chance to go back and tie up Ian's storyline.

He said: "That would be really a nice end – not that I wish him to die – and full circle for the character."

Ian Murray's death could be hinted at in season six, prompting the opportunity for both Jamie and his nephew to return to their homeland to pay their respects and help Jamie's sister and Young Ian's mum Jenny (Laura Donnelly).

And though fans perhaps wouldn't want to see the back of Ian Murray, especially as he's barely had time to get to know his niece Brianna, they may be delighted by the news that Scotland could return to once again play a huge part in the time-travel show.

The news comes as fans were given yet another glimpse of season six, with a clip featuring Jamie and Claire discussing their worries over the arrival of a character from Jamie's past.

The pair are seen sharing a tender moment as they discuss Jamie's time at Ardsmuir Prison.
