Outlander star launches new Glasgow gym concept with classes for domestic abuse victims

An Outlander star is launching a new gym which will offer free classes to domestic abuse victims and youngsters suffering with mental health issues.

Paul Donnelly, actor and fight coach, will open BXNG in Milngavie on Thursday October 21.

BXNG has slick black interiors with state of the art equipment from Primal Strength, as well as a full size black and gold boxing ring.

This is where the trained team at BXNG will offer one to one boxing training and small group fitness classes such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, strength and conditioning, plus mini taster sessions to help introduce boxing training to children for fitness and self esteem.

To coincide with the launch, Paul will also launch a new Scottish charity, In Your Corner.

The charity is the brainchild of Paul and his wife Natalia Celino and it will aim to offer free fitness classes and personalised training programmes for victims of domestic abuse and youngsters suffering with mental health issues such as anxiety and bullying.

In Your Corner will work hand in hand with charity partners Women’s Aid and Back Onside to identify individuals who would benefit from expert training from the BXNG coaching team.

Paul said: “We are absolutely delighted to get BXNG Glasgow officially opened and launched. We have been working tirelessly over the past year to recruit the right team and ensure our programmes are exactly where we want them to be.

"There is nothing quite like this in the local area or in the city, and feedback from locals so far has been incredible. So much so that we have a waiting list for members already and we can't wait to see people coming through the doors to train in our one of a kind, friendly community focussed gym."

Paul, who is most well-known for his recent roles in Outlander and The Nest, has built a successful career playing hard men roles in films such as The Wee Man, Killing Escobar and Bronson and alongside acting he choreographs fight scenes and stunts.

He continued: “Out-with locals we will offer specific sessions and training programmes for vulnerable individuals. Sadly domestic abuse cases and reports of bullying are at an all time high, and we want to help empower these victims and provide them with confidence to train and grow their self esteem in a safe space.

"Given that we will be welcoming people who may be intimidated about training in a gym environment, we are committed to creating an ethos at BXNG that is welcoming, fun and inclusive.”

Angela Devine, chief executive of Glasgow Women’s Aid said:“Glasgow Women’s Aid is very pleased to be working alongside Paul, In Your Corner and BXNG gym to provide safe spaces for our survivors to exercise, learn self-defence, and feel safe doing so. It’s a great initiative and will benefit so many.”

Founder of Back Onside, Libby Emmerson said:“Back Onside is excited and looking forward to a great partnership with In Your Corner which can provide a safe place to exercise and workout for our clients who are struggling with their mental health and in need of somewhere to exercise.”
