Outlander season 6: Everything you need to know with less than a week to go until debut

Outlander fans across the globe have been waiting patiently for the return of the hit TV show which has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide.

The highly-anticipated season 6 will return to Starz on March 6 - less than a week away - with Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan back in their title roles as Claire and Jamie Fraser.

Twitter and fan forums have been hot with speculation over what is to come this season, and even the cast have been tight-lipped on what fans can expect.

So what do we know about season 6 of Outlander? Here we delve into what has been announced so far, what Sam and Claire have been saying and how to watch the latest season.

What storylines can we expect?

We already know the threat of the Browns still looms large, while the arrival of the Christies and the impending Revolutionary War are also set to shake things up.

Another teaser shows Claire's reaction to news of the Boston Tea Party, the incident which set the torch paper alight for the coming Revolutionary War.

In the 30 second clip, Claire and Jamie can be seen speaking to Major MacDonald of the British Army, with the Fraser Ridge matriarch distraught by the news she knows means only one thing. Also key to this season, it will be the point at which Jamie, knowing what Claire knows about the war, will have to pick sides and it seems the British are already keen on him fighting for them.

For Roger (Richard Rankin) and Bree (Sophie Skelton) MacKenzie, the new season is expected to cement that the young family will now try to settle into life in the 18th century and Fraser's Ridge.

And for Young Ian, Scots star John Bell said the “ominous” season six is set to test his character once again.

Speaking with TV mag Digital Spy, John revealed Young Ian is once again between worlds, stuck between his two families, the Fraser Ridge clan and the Mohawk, with the arrival of the Revolutionary War threatening to drive a wedge between both.

The Hobbit star, who is also set to make his stage debut in Broadway hit, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, stated things hinted at season five will soon come to fruition.

“There is a lot of mystique about Ian’s life away from the Ridge," John explained. "And if you haven’t read the books and don’t know what is happening, season six certainly delves into Ian’s character more so I have a lot to play with.”

How many episodes will there be?

This season is set to be shorter than normal with only eight episodes, but it isn't going to be any less dramatic if the episode titles are anything to go by.

With names like Hour of the Wolf, Sticks and Stones and even more dramatically, The World Turned Upside Down it seems this shorter season will be action packed.

Episode 601: Echoes

Episode 602: Allegiance

Episode 603: Temperance

Episode 604: Hour of the Wolf

Episode 605: Give Me Liberty

Episode 606: The World Turned Upside Down

Episode 607: Sticks and Stones

Episode 608: I am not Alone

Will Lord John Gray return?

Could one of the most-loved Outlander characters be set for an exciting return in season six?

Lord John Grey, played by the excellent David Berry, has been a fan favourite since his first appearance in season two in the episode Je Suis Prest.

And after he left to return to England to help Jamie's son William in season five, show lovers were sure they'd seen the last of him for the foreseeable but new clips related to season six have got them excited again.

A clip has emerged, which has since been deleted by the official Outlander account. Showing the cast talking about season six, it seemed to have David Gray also apparently making an appearance.

Since the clip has been deleted, it's impossible now to find it but if David Berry did indeed make an appearance it could be an exciting hint that one of our faves could make a return this season.

How can I watch in the UK?

Outlander has now officially stopped being free to view on Amazon's streaming service in the UK, meaning fans will have to sign up to a new subscription service to watch their favourite show.

The Starz original series has officially moved from being free on Amazon Prime Video to now needing an extra subscription to view them.

Those wanting to catch up with the first five seasons before the new one airs will now have to stream them using pay for streaming site Starzplay.

The move, which was first announced back in September last year.

What is StarzPlay?

Similar to streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, StarzPlay was originally launched in the US but is also now available in the UK.

The streaming service will allow fans in the UK to watch shows at the same time as their American counterparts, meaning they won't have to wait to see the first episode of Outlander.

You can download the app for your phone (both Android and Apple) but it's also available as a channel through Amazon Prime Video and has also been announced for Virgin TV.

How much is StarzPlay streaming service?

StarzPlay is priced at £4.99 per month through the StarzPlay app, Amazon Prime Video or Virgin TV.

You can enjoy a 30-day free trial of the service through Amazon - but it will still cost you an extra £4.99 a month after this period.

Will Outlander season six be shown anywhere else?

No, according to the Starz announcement, season six will only be shown through the StarzPlay app.
