Outlander Season 5- Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe share first look at upcoming series

The Droughtlander is finally over - Scotland's favourite period drama has released the first sneak peek of the new season

Outlander fans got a real treat last night, when lead stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe shared the first official still from the new hotly-anticipated season.

Fans were given a glimpse of what to expect in season five, which is expected to return later this year .

The pic shows clip show Sam’s character Jamie Fraser gazing into the eyes of Claire - played by Caitriona Balfe.

Season five will be based on The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in Diana Gabaldon's series. It will follow the Frasers in colonial America as they build their new life.

The upcoming season will consist of 12 episodes and filming is already underway.

Earlier this month Caitriona had also teased the cameras rolling on season five in Scotland, by posting a pic of herself holding episode one's script on Instagram.

Then Sam broke the news that the acting duo would also be working as producers on the season.

The Scots actor shared the news on Instagram Stories on April 4, posting an image of a storyboard from the premiere episode under a placard with his name titled "producer/cast":

Fans weren’t slow in taking to Twitter to share their excitement over the new still - and were particularly happy to see a new wig on Jamie.

One wrote: "The wigs are perfect keep it coming! High budget show? It shows from these photos! Congratulations."

Another excited fan tweeted: "Stunning Frasers. This makes me so happy! I love them and the way they look at each other."

And another said: "Let's talk about a power couple. You have no idea how I missed this."
