Outlander Sam Heughan's fans baffled after he finds unidentified sea creature during Men In Kilts

Outlander star Sam Heughan's fans were left baffled after he found an unidentified sea creature during the making of his documentary Men In Kilts.

Sam picked up the flesh coloured blob while he was fishing for the new series and took one look at it before having to throw it back into the sea in disgust.

The Scots born actor said: "Oh my god. What is that? that's disgusting. I'm not hungry anymore."

As he tries to get fisherman, the aptly named Captain Kirk to take it, the Captain tells him 'no, just put it over the side' and Sam ends up throwing it back into the sea.

Sam then asks him to go back to shore, and adds in a cheeky Star Trek reference by saying 'make it so' much to his fans delight.

As Sam and the programme makers asked: "Any marine biologist fans want to weigh in on identifying this mystery creature?", fans admitted: "Ok... several of us wanna know what that brainy thing is that Sam Heughan threw back in the water...seriously what was it???"

As people furiously tried to google the odd pink jelly like sea being, one person suggested it was a sea nipple, comparing it to a breast implant.

Others seems to think it was 'a blob fish'.

Another fan commented: ''Someone else said a geoduck, but I am not sure! The best answer I saw was a rare sea haggis...lol!

Another ventured: "Lol don't know what it was but, looked similar to what is know as a blow fish. As once it's caught and leaves the water it blows up, unbeatable here in Australia."

Someone else suggested: "Looked like Sea Pork( yes their is such a thing)." while another added: "The closest thing that could think of is a tunicate, aka, sea squrt! We studied these things years age in Comparative Anatomy! They are actually a cordate, a primitive vertebrate animal!!"

Another viewer offered: "It's a clam. Sometimes they come out of the shell like that."

And another added: "Escargot, giant snail without its shell. Well known habitat in that part of the ocean. China's delicacy."

Others thought it was a sea potato and while Sam and his costars haven't commented on the find, Outlander fans were thrilled to get the opinion of a real expert.

None other than Diana Gabaldon, the Outlander author with a master of science in marine biology came to the rescue to tell fans what she thought.

Diane wrote: 'It looks like a closed anemone."

And when one fan questioned her she added: "They open--with the long, streaming tentacles that make them look like flowers--when the tide comes in, bringing food. When the tide goes out, they draw in their tentacles and close, to avoid dehydration."
