Outlander's Sam Heughan toasts to Burns Night with a 'wee dram' of Sassenach whisky

Sam Heughan has toasted to Burns Night with a glass of his own whisky.

The Outlander actor took to Instagram to wish his fans a happy Burns Night and of course he couldn't mark the occasion without a wee dram of his own brand Sassenach.

Reciting no other than Rabbie Burns himself, Sam treated fans to a very Scottish version of ' Scotch Drink'.

Raising a glass, Sam smiled for the camera and said: "Happy Burns Night everyone! Hope you're having a wee dram of Sassenach, wherever you are in the world, wishing you all a very bonnie Burns Night! Slainte!"

And fans were loving the video and sent their best from different corners of the world on Burns Nights.

One wrote: "Sláinte Sam! This accent is music to my ears."

Another commented: "Slàinte Mhath from Canada!"

Another said: "Happy #burnsday cheers from Oz."

While one wrote: "Celebrating with a Sassenach hot toddy!"

Sam released his whisky back in 2020 but at the end of last year, he announced that he will be branching out and creating a brand of tequila.

The Scots actor has teamed up with El Tequileño Master Distiller Antonio 'Tony' Salles to create a new limited edition 'Sassenach Select' tequila.

On Twitter he said: "Sam wrote: "It's Here! So thrilled and so excited to introduce our latest Sassenach Spirits baby!

"In our journey to identify unique spirits from around the globe, a couple of years ago, I met and became friends with the brilliantly talented and 3rd generation master distiller Tony Salles and the El Tequileño team."

"We were welcomed into their family and community, discovering we shared a passion that runs deep. We talked, laughed and explored the Mexican landscape, despite being from different continents, we agreed on the same vision of craftsmanship and quality."

Sam has won multiple awards for his Sassenach Whisky (so named for the pet name his character Jamie has given Caitriona Balfe's Claire on the show) and sold out several batches to delighted fans.

Speaking about the latest release, an exciting Double Wood Reposado (a type of tequila that's spent a period of time in oak casks), he added: "So here it is! The Sassenach Select.

"The perfect blend of our cultures and passion, a partnership steeped in tradition, heritage, and a love of good tequila!

"El Tequileño’s long legacy of producing award-winning tequila and The Sassenach Spirits’ fresh look at award-winning whisky have yielded the perfect friendship, resulting in this unique The Sassenach Select limited batch. I’m proud of our new baby.

"We hope you enjoy [it] as much as we did creating it."

“Learning about the process behind creating The Sassenach whisky, and hearing stories of Scotland has been an inspirational experience for me,” explained Tony.

“The Scottish and Mexican cultures have many similarities — both have great pride in their countries, deep-rooted histories, and of course, a great passion for producing their national spirits.”

The master distiller explained that it is handcrafted using the "finest matured agave from the Highlands of Jalisco and mineral-rich water from El Volcán de Tequila", and distilled in traditional copper pot stills.

It is then aged for two years in American oak barrels and finished in French oak barrels.

The new spirit is already for sale in the US on the Sassenach Spirits website with the new spirit priced at $99 (£75).
