Outlander's Sam Heughan tells of battles with swarms of midges while filming

As Outlander's Jamie Fraser, Sam Heughan is used to his fair share of battles but he recently revealed that there was one foe he couldn't overcome.

According to the actor, Scotland's most persistent pest, the midge, proved to be his undoing on set.

Speaking about their time on set together, Sam and fellow actor Graham McTavish, who recently filmed travelogue series Men in Kilts together, revealed that Mr Heughan is something of a "midge magnet".

The pair, who have also just released a book, Clandlands, which delves into their time filming their new show, were speaking to travel website Wanderlust when Sam told of how the determined little insects were particularly fond of getting under his wig.

When the duo were asked about how they dealt with midges on set, Sam told Wanderlust: "On Outlander we have to deal with them a lot.

"We've discovered that midges like warm places that are slightly moist - they love to get under my wig and then your life is hell.

"They just live in your wig, which is pretty nasty. But on this shoot it was possibly even worse. I think they saw us coming. But Graham seems to be curiously not affected at all."

A jocular Graham joked: "I think just my sheer rage was enough to deter them.

He added that they "feasted" on Sam, he said: "I mean, I would look around and there would be this cloud around his head - sometimes look like he was having a fit."

Sam quipped that it was partly the reason he was "semi-drunk the whole time".

The duo then joked about the fact that nobody talks about the midges in Scotland, stating that it's like a "secret".

Graham said: "You know when they're showing the beautiful vistas of Scotland on TV, the camera lenses are covered in clouds of midges."

Sam explained that the biting beasties are a huge problem on set, stating that sometimes while filming they are "just eating you alive"

He said: "You're trying not to think about it or react. As soon as they call cut, I've seen myself and my co-stars just go crazy. It's like, 'Argh!'"
