Outlander's Sam Heughan named Drama Actor of the year in Gold Derby TV awards

Sam Heughan has been named Drama Actor of the year in the annual Gold Derby TV Awards for his performances in Outlander season 5.

The Scots actor, who plays Jamie Fraser in the hit show, took home the accolade at the awards which celebrate the best television that aired during the June 2019 through May 2020 season.

Sam beat the likes of Jason Bateman (Ozark), fellow Scot Brian Cox (Succession) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) to take home the title.

Posting on his Twitter account, Sam thanked his fans for their support: " Ahhh GOLD from Gold Derby!! Thank you guys, we love your support and the fans for constantly showing us support and enthusiasm! Here’s to season 6!"

Speaking about the win, the Gold Derby team said that this is Sam's second win after just his second nomination, and saw him beat out the two Succession actors by around 150 votes.

Fellow Outlander star Caitriona Balfe narrowly missed out on the Drama Actress of the Year, just losing to Laura Linney in Ozark by just two votes.

Comedy Schitt's Creek was the big winner on the night, proving to be incredibly popular in the voting, taking home six wins and a clean sweep in the comedy categories.

Drama series Succession was the second most successful show with four wins.
