Outlander's Caitriona Balfe thanks fans as seventh season begins filming

Caitriona Balfe has paid tribute to her diehard fans as she and the rest of the Outlander cast prepare to film the seventh season.

The Irish actress plays Claire Fraser in the hit show, alongside Sam Heughan, who plays her on-screen husband, Highland warrior Jamie Fraser.

The historical fantasy series, based on Diana Gabaldon's books, has been a firm favourite of viewers both sides of the Atlantic.

And Caitriona thanked fans as she got ready to start shooting the latest installment.

She wrote on Twitter: "Here we go …. Season 7!!!!!! What????? Hard to imagine what we thought might be one season in 2013 is still going and we have all you amazing fans to thank!!!!!"

The official Outlander page also confirmed that the cast are back on Fraser's Ridge for filming of the new season seven!

Announcing the news, they said: "As we devour Season 6, they're already cooking up #Outlander Season 7!"

Sophie Skelton, who plays Bree, said: "We’re back, clan!!!

"We hope you’re enjoying Season 6 and you can now rest easy knowing that S7 is up, running, and on its way to you!

"We love you more than words can say. Here’s to you #Outlander fandom."

The show recently returned to our screens after a two-year hiatus, which many fans dubbed 'Droughtlander', and now airs weekly on Sundays.

Outlander production faced a number of delays whilst shooting the sixth season, as filming was halted and hindered due to Covid-19 protocols.

As a result, the sixth season of Outlander is only eight episodes long - which is sure to leave fans disappointed and longing for more adventures from their favourite characters.

Outlander's showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.

"Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

In an interview with ET, executive producer Maril Davis even went so far as to call the next season "supersized."

Outlander resumes on Sunday on STARZ PLAY.
