Outlander fans to be treated to virtual tours of show's Scottish locations

A Scottish tour company is keeping Outlander fans entertained during lockdown by offering virtual tours of the show's Scottish filming locations.

Catriona Stevenson, who set up Slàinte Scotland Tours in 2013, and partner Helmut Watterott have set up the guided events which are conducted over Zoom and take guests to locations like Doune Castle (which doubles as Castle Leoch in the show) and Midhope Castle (Jamie Fraser's home of Lallybroch).

Catriona has conducted three different virtual tours so far, with plans to host two every week going forward.

A mega fan herself, Catriona has previously worked with the cast and crew, and even met Sam, Caitriona and Diana Gabaldon.

She has also received a private studio tour during the filming of season three and played a supporting actor in Seasons 2 and 4.

Drawing on this experience and her love of Scottish history for each tour, Catriona explained that out of all the virtual tours, the Outlander has proved very popular, she said: "It was a wonderful evening and everyone had a good time escaping the current stresses of these unprecedented times, especially apparent during Mental Health Week.

"So although, we may be visiting Scotland at the moment from our livingrooms, things will return to normal - Scotland is Waiting."

Explaining the reasoning behind the tours, Catriona explained they began as a bit of fun and a way to make money to keep the business ticking over during the lockdown, but that they have helped her connect with fellow fans and 'would be tourists' from around the world, who love both Outlander and Scotland, she said: "As a tour operator, the current Covid19 Pandemic has been devastating to business. We have seen a year's worth of bookings cancel which has made for some difficult choices.

"However, instead of accepting defeat, we decided to fight back, by organising two Virtual Tours of Scotland for a small fee per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays).

"Backed up with over 7 years of film footage, photographs, historical knowledge and experience, it may not be as good as the real thing, but it serves to provide a bit of respite to those stuck indoors, or whom were disappointed in not being able to visit in 2020."

Costing just £5, the zoom stream features the full Outlander tour, history of each site as well as the filming location information.

Catriona added that there is also a walkthrough, photographs and participants will receive a PDF copy of their Outlander Tour Bible.

Those looking to find out more about the tours can visit the Slainte website.

Cat and Helm are also planning on hosting other virtual tours around Scotland.

The pair say that though many people may be disappointed that they cannot visit Scotland at this time, Slainte Virtual Tours will be "bringing Scotland to them".
