Outlander fans spot major plot hole as massive age gap revealed between Young Ian and Fergus Fraser

‘Droughtlander’ is well and truly in full swing and we reckon it will be a while before season seven of Outlander is on our screens but in the meantime fans have been delving into Diana Gabaldon ’s original series of bestselling novels and have unfortunately uncovered some plot line gaps in the Fraser timeline.

Fans have figured that Fergus Fraser is considerably younger in the Outlander series than he is in the books, writes The Express.

One Reddit user took to the site to share their thoughts, and they posted: “The show makes it seem like Fergus and Ian are a bit closer in age. Bree and Fergus don’t interact much on screen so I am not really sure how we are supposed to view their age.

“I am also not sure if Marsali is supposed to be the same age or younger than Bree.”

In the popular STARZ series, Fergus is portrayed by 32-year-old actor César Domboy, while Young Ian, who is portrayed by John Hunter Bell, is currently 25.

However, in Diana’s books, their age difference is more than double the seven-year gap between the two co-stars.

Brianna McKenzie, who is played by English actress Sophie Skelton, is actually slightly younger than Marsali’s actress at 28, while Lauren Lyle is 29.

According to the novels, the post continues: “Fergus was born in 1735, Young Ian 1752, Brianna 1948 and Marsali in 1751.”

Unfortunately for Outlander’s die-hard fans, it appears that the TV adaptation isn't completely the same as the ages of their actors don't match up with those of the characters.

The popular show, which has fans across the glob, takes place across three decades of the 18th Century, however the show’s core cast hasn’t appeared to age more than a few years.

This has made knowing the accurate ages of the Fraser clan’s ages considerably difficult, especially because in the novels, their exact birth dates are revealed.

Although Claire and Jamie’s progeny all appear to be around the same age, Fergus at least is supposed to look markedly older than his wife and young cousin.

The post continued: “So in the books their age difference is huge. Fergus is 17 years older than Ian and 15 years older than Marsali. I am not really sure how to calculate the other three age differences with Brianna’s. But I think she would be 13 years younger than Fergus, four years older than Young Ian and five years older than Marsali.”

Brianna’s age makes things a little more difficult, as she would have been born in 1746 before Claire decided to return to the 20th Century.

Even so, she is still meant to be several years older than both Young Ian and Marsali, despite all three being in their mid-to-late 20s.

Another fan added: “Fergus is way older than Ian but in the show they seem to be peers of the same age more or less. I was surprised when I read the books and saw the age gap between them.”

As Outlander heads into its seventh season, it’s quite possible the actors could be aged up by makeup to more accurately reflect the passage of time depicted in Diana’s bestselling novels.
