Outlander fans speculate on who the whistling thief is at end of episode 5

Outlander season six has been filled with some great storylines but it seems the end of episode five is set to throw us another one.

When Claire and Jamie are set to leave Wilmington after meeting Flora MacDonald (Shauna MacDonald), Aunt Jocasta and Lord John Grey, she hears someone whistling a tune that she knows from the future.

The tune is of course the Colonel Bogey March, and was initially written by members of the British army in 1914, meaning whoever is whistling it is also from the future.

Dismissing it when she is queried by Jamie, the camera then pans to a local jail where a long haired man can be seen in one of the cells.

Who was the mysterious jewellery thief? (Starz)

Gripping a jewel he had earlier stolen from Flora MacDonald, the thief has his back turned to the camera.

But fans were quick to speculate who he could be, as the jewel link to time travel was also another big clue.

One fan wrote: "OMG who is the man whistling in jail?? Can't wait for the next episode."

While another @ladyvictoria8 added that it could be fan favourite Murtagh Fitzgibbons returning to the show: "I think it's him. He was building the stones on the ground when he was talking to Jamie about being hard to find. It's a stretch but hoping somehow he went through the stones. The only thing is who died with the regulators?"

When queried how he'd know the tune from Claire's time, Victoria added: "Murtagh wrote down the years Claire lived through so it's possible he went ahead. WE WILL SEE! I can't take it."

However, most others seem to believe it's another of the characters who we've seen before.

One wrote: "I believe, the whistling man at the end of the episode had to have been Wendigo Donner."

Another agreed: "The whistling man in jail, he's the man from the future who was among Claire's rapists right? I thought they killed them all."

Fans will remember, Wendigo Donner was part of a group of time travellers who Claire has come across before – The Montauk Five – who are trying to stop the Native American people being decimated and forced off of their ancestral lands by the arrival of the colonists.

Wendigo Donner (Brennan Martin) was among Lionel Brown’s band of men who tortured Claire in the Season 5 finale, though he didn't take part in hurting her and wasn't around when Jamie and his crew arrived.

The long hair certainly fits.
