Outlander fan favourites return in episode 5 as preview drops showing what's next for the hit show

In what must have been the worst kept secret for this new season of Outlander a certain fan favourite has made their return to the show.

[Spoiler Warning] this is a big 'un so don't read on if you don't want next week's episode spoiled.

The preview for season 6, episode 5, "Give Me Liberty", has just dropped and it's reintroduced not one but two characters from the past who fans will be excited to see.

Beginning to focus heavily on the coming storm of the Revolutionary war – those clouds are no longer on the horizon, they darkening the skies directly above Fraser's Ridge – it seems Jamie's divided loyalties are about to be sorely tested.

And it looks like Lord John Grey and Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) are being dragged into the coming drama.

Yes, you heard us right it looks like Lord John Grey is finally back on the screen with the Aussie actor reprising his role.

Oh yes, Lord John Grey is back in Outlander season six (Starz)

It's great news for fans, who were worried he might not return this season.

One fan wrote: "John finally! So good to see him btw, this wonderful character needs his own spin-off!! We haven't forgotten..."

While another added: "Oh boy Roger! And let me guess Malva is up to something, I thought she was going to be another ally to Claire."

According to the synopsis, this episode will be a doozy: "Claire and Jamie experience the rising tensions in the colonies when they attend a Loyalist event in Wilmington in honour of the Scottish heroine Flora MacDonald."

If you didn't know, Flora McDonald is part of the story from the theme song of the show, the Skye Boat Song, she was the brave lady from the Outer Hebrides who helped the Bonnie Prince, Charles Edward Stuart, escape the British Government forces (chiefly her fiancee and father in law) “over the sea to Skye" by dressing him up as one of her maids.

Arrested for her role in his eventual escape to France, Flora eventually ended up in North Carolina with her husband, Allan MacDonald who was a general for the British Government.

If anyone understood divided loyalties then, it was Flora. Interestingly, it's been confirmed that Andrew Gower will be reprising his role as the Bonnie Prince in season 6.

And speaking of divided loyalties, it seems Roger (Richard Rankin) is in a spot of bother with his wife Bree (Sophie Skelton) over the time he was spending helping one of the Fisherfolk.

It's an interesting dynamic with people clearly questioning Bree over why her man is around the widow so much.

Elsewhere, a love charm is discovered by Marsali, while a sleekit looking Malva watches on, could the young Christie have something to do with it? And if so, who is her intended target?

Armed redcoats, what looks like a riot (with Jamie and Lord John directly involved) and a worried-looking Aunt Jocasta then appear before Claire can be heard stating: "The tide has turned. Our allegiance now is to his new nation."

We now can't wait to see what happens.
