Outlander has announced that its eight season will be the final one of the hit show.

The hugely popular series confirmed on Twitter that it has been renewed for a final time by Starz, with cast paying an emotional tribute to its fans.

Star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, said: "What an incredible journey with an incredible fanbase. #Outlander has officially been renewed for an eighth and final season.

"It's been an incredible journey," before adding, "we love you, Outlander fans."

Catriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, added: "Thank you so much for being with us from day one."

The cast continued on to promise the show would "go out with a bang" and assuring fans "it's not over yet"

Sam continued that the cast "can't wait to bring the last season to you guys," while Catriona added, "we hope that we do you proud and we are very, very grateful, so thank you."

Season seven was filmed during 2022 and is due to premiere in Summer 2023.

The season six finale finished on a cliffhanger and saw an attempt to rip Jamie and Claire Fraser apart, as Richard Brown took Claire to jail in Wilmington to stand for the murder of Malve Christie. Whereas, Jamie was sent packing back to Scotland, but Young Ian rescued the hero, who went back to save his lover Claire.

A greenlight has also been given for the LIONSGATE+ Original Series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood - a prequel series from Matthew B. Roberts.

The 10-episode series will centre on the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.
