Outdoor gym to be fenced off following off-road bike crash

An outdoor gym in Tyldesley will be fenced off 'urgently' after an incident including an off-road bike.

Emergency services rushed to a park off York Avenue, in the Shakerley area, last Sunday (February 14) following reports that a teenager had fallen off his bike.

The boy was taken to hospital with 'serious' leg injuries and Wigan Council have moved to make sure that no similar incidents can occur in future.

Councillor Nazia Rehman, who represents the Tyldesley ward, said that the gym is being fenced off 'as a matter of urgency'.

She said: "I have been contacted by numerous Shakerley residents expressing serious concerns about the safety of children using the outdoor gym and I welcome the council’s quick and decisive response.

"A site visit to arrive at a design for the scheme will be conducted in the next few days and I look forward to the peace of mind the fence will hopefully provide for parents."

Coun Rehman also claimed that residents have complained for a long time about the use of off-road bikes in the area and referenced another similar incident a few months ago.

She urged residents to call the police if they feel that the area is being 'plagued' with use of the bikes.

Coun Rehman added: "The police have ways of dealing with illegal off-road vehicles being driven on the common and I urge residents to report any instances to them on 101".
