Outcome of Consultations on Yemen: Deal on Taiz, Hodeidah, Prisoners

The final session of the Sweden consultations on Yemen. Asharq Al-Awsat

An agreement was struck Thursday between Yemen's legitimate government and the Houthi delegation on the cities of Taiz and Hodeidah.

The latest deal on the last day of consultations in Sweden was seen as an achievement following a similar agreement reached on the exchange of prisoners earlier this week.

Al-Arabiya news channel quoted the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al Jaber as saying that Thursday’s agreement states the withdrawal of the Houthi militias from the Red Sea city of Hodeidah and its port, and their pullout from Taiz.

Earlier, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said the outcome of Yemen’s peace consultations will be conveyed to the UN Security Council on Friday.

The consultations, which started last week near Stockholm, took place in "positive spirit and good faith", she said in a telephone interview with Reuters.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash was quick to welcome the agreement between Yemen's warring parties.

"Encouraging news today from Sweden. Important political progress made including the status of Hodeidah. The Coalition & Yemeni forces' military pressure enabled this significant breakthrough," Gargash said in a tweet about the Saudi-led Arab Coalition.

Also, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, Prince Khalid bin Salman, welcomed the United Nations-backed agreement.

"The agreement announced today will help bring back security to the region including the security of the Red Sea, a vital waterway for international trade," he said on his twitter account, adding that he hoped Iran-allied Houthis would stop "working on behalf of the Iranian regime’s interests".
