'Outcome could have been so different' - Suspected drunk driver crashes on M5

A suspected drink-driver crashed his BMW on the M5 and then refused to provide police with a sample.

Avon and Somerset Police's road safety team shared a picture of the collision's aftermath, warning the outcome could have been 'so different'.

The smash occurred between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead) at 10.35pm on Monday, July 6.

Officers closed a section of the motorway for an hour while they moved the vehicle to the hard shoulder.

Posting on Twitter, a spokesperson said: "The team dealt with two RTCs tonight where the outcome could have been so different. Both drivers under the influence of alcohol.

"The driver of this vehicle on the M5 refused to provide a sample and will be off to court in due course. Please don’t drink and drive #fatalfour."

A force spokesman confirmed the road reopened at about 11.40pm.

He said: "Ambulance service attended but unclear if any injuries sustained."

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said a man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for 'further care'.
