Reduced number of students to return to East Kilbride college this week

South Lanarkshire College have confirmed 20 COVID-19 have been linked to the East Kilbride campus - but say a small number of students will return to campus this week.

The college say a "much-reduced" number of students and staff will be on campus from Monday, January 11.

They revealed that 20 COVID cases were identified between last August and December.

It comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said in her briefing today the vast majority of learning and teaching will be "online only until the end of February".

There will be exceptions in a very small number of cases where remote study is not possible, such as student nurses or doctors on a practical placement.

Students have now been told to 'stay at home' as return to college and universities is extended.

South Lanarkshire Council say a very small percentage of their students are unable to learn remotely, may have essential placements or attendance is critical for reasons relating to student well-being.

It was previously announced schools would remain closed until at least February.

At her briefing today the First Minister confirmed a further 2309 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Scotland, which is 8.1% of the tests carried out yesterday - with 390 of those in the NHS Lanarkshire area.

There have also been 93 more deaths in the past 24 hours of people who tested positive in the last 28 days.

Principal Aileen McKechnie said: “Throughout this pandemic, the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, students and wider community has been and will remain our absolute priority.

“We have a student cohort of 5000. From Monday, January 11 less than one per cent of students will attend the college for critical in-class learning which cannot be delivered online.

"All appropriate health and safety mitigations are in place - all staff and students must be masked in class settings and when walking through the communal areas of the college. Each student will be in a COVID-secure class setting with robust cleaning protocols in place.

"Revised room risk assessments have been introduced, and chemical fogging of the building will take place on a daily basis.

“At South Lanarkshire College, we fully recognise our responsibilities as a place of learning and teaching; our duty of care to ensure all our students’ wellbeing and development is supported; and our responsibilities to ensure the health and wellbeing of our entire college community.

"This is why, under Level 4, critical in-person student wellbeing and student support services have been permitted to continue under guidance from Scottish Government.”

South Lanarkshire College would like to state that no students have been on campus this week.
