Outback personality Russell Coight returns to Red Centre ahead of TV comeback

Russell Coight is set to return to commercial television next month, and has once again filmed part of the series in the Red Centre.

Fan favourite and 'outback survival guru' Russell Coight is back, returning to television screens next month after a 16-year hiatus.

Having previously filmed at the Ooraminna Station Homestead south of Alice Springs, the popular personality returned to film there last year, as well as other locations in the region.

Produced by Working Dog Productions, Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures first hit screens in 2001, and then, following two seasons and a telemovie, it wrapped in 2004.

The mockumentary-style series featured the continuous misadventures of the hapless outback guide, played by comedian Glenn Robbins, who also played the character of Kel Knight in the Kath and Kim series.

'Mr Coight' said via a Channel 10 news release last year that his return was always a question of timing.

"I've got some free time now that my croc park has been closed," he said.

"The court order banning me from coming within 10 metres of a marsupial has finally been lifted.

"So strap yourself in for another sun-drenched series of outback adventures — all Aussie style."

Red Centre filming

Ooraminna Station Homestead owner Nicole Lorimer said it had been great to have the crew along for Coight's return.

"The whole production company and the cast were fabulous to watch work," Ms Lorimer said.

"They were really professional and easy to work with.

"I think every Australian that's seen Russell Coight learns to love his antics.

"He is a very clever man and he is a fabulous actor."

Ms Lorimer said it had been fascinating to see what went on behind the scenes of such a production, and even managed to wangle her way, along with her excited children, into a scene.

"It was really, really fun to watch and fun to be a part of," she said.

Boost for tourism

Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures is not the first TV series or movie to be filmed at Ooraminna.

National TV shows such as Australian Idol have been filmed there, and more recently Warwick Thorton's movie Sweet Country, starring Sam Neill, was shot there.

Ms Lorimer said to have shows and movies of such calibre filmed in central Australia was a great way to promote the area.

"I'm hoping it's encouraging people in the city to actually come to the outback," she said.

"All publicity for the outback is good publicity I think, because it is the most wonderful experience if you actually can bring yourself to come out here."

Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures returns to prime-time commercial television on August 5.
