Our verdict on the first VEGAN fish and chip shop in Leeds

They say to never change a winning formula, but that's exactly what this fish and chip shop in Kirkstall has done, by introducing vegan alternatives to the British classic.

It's a risky strategy - and it's not one that entirely pays off.

That said, the majority of items on the menu at JJ's Vish & Chips are great.

The chips were very good, the vegan battered sausage was a nice alternative to meat and the minty mushy peas were brilliant.

My main gripe was with the vegan fish, which is made from the blossom of a banana plant.

I'm not saying it's easy to replicate fish with plant-based products - far from it - but this version just doesn't work.

The texture is incredibly odd and the additional flavourings make it taste artificial.

There's no doubt that JJ's Vish & Chips will be a massive hit with the city's burgeoning vegan and vegetarian community, but there's a bit of work to do to convince meat eaters to swerve their local chippy on a regular basis.
