Neil Bartlett's artful reconstruction and deconstruction of the Dickens tale is definitely the one to choose if, like Scrooge, you find that festive cheer and pantomimes cause your blood pressure to leap.

Cinderella

Charles Way's magical retelling of the Cinderella tale puts the emphasis on mothers and daughters and sisters. The Polka's high-class production is shot through with a Mozartian motif.

Peter Pan

JM Barrie's tale about the boy who refuses to grow up flies into town, with Matthew Kelly as the dastardly Captain Hook.

David Almond's strange novel is one of those crossover books appeals to adults as well as children. Director Wils Wilson should make it an imaginative experience for all.

The Jollies

Each year Alan Ayckbourn writes a Christmas show; this one features a trip to see a magician that goes horribly wrong. Will it become a classic like previous Ayckbourn children's plays?

Around the World in 80 Days
Liverpool Playhouse
Phil Willmott's dashing Victorian musical adventure, last year's BAC hit, moves up a notch in scale. It should be equally effective in Liverpool.

The Firebird

The Watermill's Christmas shows are always a delight, and this year's should be no different with Neil Duffield's version of the story in which Prince Ivan attempts to capture the golden firebird.

The terrific Tobacco Factory follows up last year's sell-out Treasure Island with a musical version of Mark Twain's Mississippi adventure story.
