Our Girl fans puzzled as Michelle Keegan appears to tease Captain James return

Our Girl fans were left guessing in tonight's episode after Michelle Keegan's character Georgie Lane made a reference to Captain James.

Eagle-eyed fans quickly jumped on the reference and expressed their hopes of his return.

The character, who mysteriously disappeared in season three, hasn't been heard from since.

In tonight's episode of the hit BBC One war drama, Lance Corporal Georgie Lane referred to the character during a psychological meeting.

In the conversation, Georgie explained that her romance with Captain James as just being a 'rebound'.

"It's not like there’s not been anyone else. There was one – a good friend of mine. Captain James?

"He was a good friend of mine. It was more of a comfort, rebound situation," she said in the episode.

In the dramatic cliff-hanger finale in season three, Captain James literally jumped off a cliff-edge and away from an ambush.

He has not been mentioned in season four until this evening.

Loyal fans rushed to Twitter to express their hopes of Captain James' imminent return.

"If next weeks episode doesn’t have Georgie being reunited with Elvis, Captain James appearing with Rab and Maisie after being captured then don’t bother airing it #OurGirl," wrote one viewer.

Another added: "I just want Captain James back. #OurGirl."

A third exclaimed: "Please tell me captain James comes back???? #OurGirl it’s just not the same!"

Fans hoped that the character might return in season four (We Love TV)

Although fans are eager for the heartthrob to return, it is widely believed that actor Ben Aldridge, who played Captain James left the show for good last season.

It remains to be seen whether writers will shed more light on his fate in the show.

Our Girl airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
