Former US Senator Mitt Romney and his family are currently mourning the tragic death of his sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, who was found dead on Friday evening after what authorities are investigating as a possible jump or fall from a five-story parking garage in Southern California. Mitt is well known as a republican who won’t support Trump.
The 64-year-old Valencia resident’s body was discovered around 8:30 PM PDT on Friday in the Santa Clarita suburb of northern Los Angeles County, near a Hyatt Regency hotel and a shopping mall. This is just awful news, and the family is understandably asking for privacy during this intensely difficult time, according to NBC.
Authorities were called to the parking garage located in the 24500 block of Town Center Drive. At the moment, the circumstances surrounding the death of Carrie Elizabeth Romney are still under investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies noted that the death “does not appear to involve foul play,” but officials have not yet determined an official cause of death.
Mitt Romney’s sister in law has died
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has currently listed her cause of death as “deferred” while they await additional tests, including toxicology results, which is a pretty standard process in these types of cases.
Following the tragic news, Mitt Romney released a statement on Tuesday, expressing the family’s profound grief. The man who wanted a pardon for Trump said, “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” the former Utah senator and Massachusetts governor said. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

The situation is made even more heartbreaking by the fact that Carrie Romney was actively navigating a divorce from Mitt Romney’s older brother, George Scott Romney, at the time of her death. Carrie and Scott Romney, a prominent attorney, were married back in November 2016. However, court documents reveal that the couple had separated on May 25 of this year, and Scott Romney filed a divorce petition on June 10. The filing, which cited “irreconcilable differences,” was not finalized before Carrie’s death.
Scott Romney, who is the father of former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel from a previous marriage, had also asked the court to block either party from receiving spousal support, claiming most of their assets were separate property accumulated before their marriage. The deceased, who was reportedly living in Santa Clarita since January 2025, had indicated to the court that she intended to resume her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas, following the divorce.
