"Our family and friends have been utterly destroyed by his loss": Dad who died in attack named as man charged with murder

A man is set to appear in court charged with murder after a man died in Bolton.

Robert Owen Greenhalgh, 31, of no fixed abode, will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court today charged in connection with the death of Robert Smethurst.

He is also charged with a section 47 assault, a spokesman for GMP said.

Police were called at about 1.30am on Thursday (September 2) to reports a man was unconscious in a bar on Bradshawgate in Bolton town centre.

Mr Smethurst, 36, of Farnworth, was treated at the scene by police officers and NWAS paramedics but died later at hospital.

His wife Amanda said: "My husband and father to our two beautiful angels was the most loving, selfless and supportive man.

"Our family and friends have been utterly destroyed by his loss."
