It’s been as quiet as a scientifically-accurate version of space for Sandra Bullock since her Oscar-nominated turn in Gravity. But she’s chosen to wisely continue her non-rom-com string of roles with political satire Our Brand Is Crisis.
The trailer for the film, based on a 2005 documentary of the same name, has now arrived giving us a look at a grounded Bullock as a spin doctor tasked with a difficult battle in Bolivia. She’s up against a rival, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and a politically unstable climate. And a suicidal llama.
The film comes from David Gordon Green whose eccentric career has taken in everything from lo-fi indies like George Washington to stoner comedies such as Pineapple Express to whatever Manglehorn was supposed to be.
It’s a strong trailer, hinting at another smart career move for Bullock and an intriguing supporting cast, including Ann Dowd, Anthony Mackie and Zoe Kazan, implies more of an ensemble piece.
It receives its world premiere at this year’s Toronto film festival, where critics will be able to assess its Oscar chances.
