The devastated parents of baby Genevieve Meehan, lovingly known as Gigi, are taking action after losing their daughter in the most tragic and avoidable of circumstances. Gigi was just nine months old when she died at Tiny Toes Nursery in Stockport in May 2022, a place her parents had trusted with her care.
The woman responsible, nursery worker Kate Roughley, was sentenced to 14 years in prison last year after being found guilty of manslaughter. During the trial, Manchester Crown Court heard that she had swaddled Gigi, strapped her face down onto a bean bag, and left her completely unattended for 90 minutes. What’s even more horrifying is that Roughley had shown “hostility” toward Gigi in the days before her death. She was the deputy manager and baby room leader at the time, reported the Express.
Now, a year on, Gigi’s parents, Katie Wheeler and John Meehan, have launched a campaign calling for sweeping reforms in early years childcare settings. They’re not just grieving parents—they’re now determined campaigners, pushing for real, lasting change.
Their campaign includes some major demands: CCTV in all nurseries, unannounced Ofsted inspections, mandatory safe sleep training for all nursery staff and inspectors, proper statutory guidance on safe sleep practices, and a clear review process that includes checking CCTV during inspections.
Katie and John are urging people to contact their MPs in support of these changes. Speaking out, Katie said: “On 9 May 2022, our daughter Genevieve Zofia Meehan (Gigi as we call her) was tragically killed at Tiny Toes Nursery in Stockport. Gigi brought love, joy, and laughter into our live,s and we loved her instantly.”
She painted a picture of a little girl full of life: “She was mischievous, loving, and full of wonder at the world around her… Our lives were so enriched by her laugh, her beautiful face, and her sense of fun.”
Katie added that they did what any parents would—checked Ofsted reports, read reviews, and trusted the nursery would keep their baby safe. “The way in which Gigi was put down to sleep carried a high and obvious risk of death. Her death was entirely preventable.”
She explained that the police discovered multiple incidents of harm on CCTV from just a short period, proving Gigi wasn’t the only child at risk.
“We want to ensure that no child dies or comes to harm in a place where they are meant to be safe… The system failed Gigi and urgent reforms are needed.”
