MUMBAI: A day after cricket, along with three other sports was excluded from the provisional list of 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the International Cricket Council insisted that "our ambition for cricket to become an Olympic sport has not changed knowing we face stiff competition from a number of other great sports."
"Our ambition for cricket to become an Olympic sport has not changed knowing we face stiff competition from a number of other great sports. Cricket was never going to be on the initial sport list and the host city process to pick additional sports starts next year, and cricket will put its case forward as part of that process. This is entirely as expected," an ICC spokesperson told TOI on Saturday.
Cricket, which has featured at the Olympics just once, in the 1900 Paris Games (where it was played between two countries), weightlifting and modern pentathlon failed to make the cut for the LA Games on Thursday.
Besides Olympics, the other multi-sport event of which cricket was a part of was the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
