Oui, oui: French President's dog interrupts meeting to pee on fireplace

An embarrassed Emmanuel Macron laughs after Nemo the dog urinated on the presidential fire place.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been left red-faced during a meeting in his office after his dog interrupted proceedings by urinating against a fire place.

Junior minister for ecology Brune Poirson had been making a point when Nemo, a two-year-old labrador-griffon cross, was caught on camera cocking a leg on the elaborate fire place at the centuries-old Elysee Palace, the official residence of the French president.

"I wondered what that noise was," Ms Poirson says as the meeting breaks into laughter.

"Does that happen often?" asks Julien Denormandie, a junior minister and long-term Macron aide.

The blushing President apologised for the interruption but kept his composure.

"You've triggered a completely unusual behaviour in my dog," he said.

Mr Macron reportedly bought the dog from a rescue centre for $380, continuing the presidential tradition of having a "first dog".

Previous first dogs have included Nicolas Sarkozy's canines, who reportedly caused thousands of euros of damage to valuable furniture in the palace, and Jacques Chirac's miniature white maltese Sumo, who reportedly attacked Mr Chirac while leaving the Elysee.

Mr Macron's predecessor, Francois Hollande, owned a female labrador named Philae.
