OTTY Natural Origin mattress review: premium materials and firm, immense support

OTTY Natural Origin.

While you might not realise it, there are a lot of specifications to look at when it comes to buying one of the best mattresses, from support and comfort to price and warranties. But one key area to consider is what your mattress is made out of.

The material of your mattress is important, as it can not only affect the environment during its manufacturing process, but it’s coming in close contact with your face, body and skin. As someone with sensitive skin and allergies, I was intrigued to hear about OTTY’s new Natural collection, and how its natural make-up would perform.

Since its launch, OTTY has developed many natural and eco-conscious mattresses, including its Pure range which features bamboo and charcoal materials. But most recently, it came out with the Natural range, featuring the Origin and the Evolve. The former is the mattress I’ve been testing for the past month, and this is how I got on.

OTTY Natural Origin review: price and availability

The OTTY Natural Origin mattress is available in double, king and super king sizes. The double size is priced at £1,049.99, the king is £1,149.99 and the super king costs £1,249.99.

As of writing, the OTTY Natural Origin is being offered with a 7% discount or you can receive two free pillows when you buy the mattress in any size. OTTY also offers a 100 night risk-free trial and a five year warranty. OTTY Natural Origin review: unboxing and set-up

The OTTY Natural Origin arrived in full, rather than rolled up like a bed-in-a-box mattress. This meant that while it was tricky to get up the stairs to my bedroom – although OTTY’s 2-person premium delivery did this for me and removed my old mattress at the same time – it meant I didn’t have to wait for the mattress to properly expand. It also meant that despite its plastic cover, it didn’t have a strong chemical smell that you often get with rolled-up mattresses.

OTTY Natural Origin review: design and features

The OTTY Natural Origin is a hybrid mattress that’s made of natural wool, cotton and pocket springs. Handmade in the UK, the OTTY Natural Origin starts with a hand-stitched tufted cover that’s made from premium viscose. The cover is quite thick and it has handles on the side so it can easily be flipped or rotated when needed – see how often should you flip your mattress for more details.

Next is the wool felt layer which is breathable yet insulating, so it’s within the mattress to help improve its temperature regulation. The wool felt material enhances the airflow so it can keep you cool during summer and warm during winter. Underneath that is the comfort polyester layer which works to wick away moisture as you sleep to cool you down while keeping the mattress hygienic.

Natural rebound cotton is further down which is another breathable and moisture-wicking material, and it sits atop the pocket spring core, which features up to 2,000 individually wrapped springs. The springs support the body and move with it for good motion isolation.

The use of these natural materials in the OTTY Natural Origin is designed to improve your sleep while offering comfort, support, durability and a more sustainable sleeping surface that’s kinder to your skin and health. Due to all these layers, the OTTY Natural Origin sits quite high and deep, and it’s rated an 8/10 for firmness.

OTTY Natural Origin review: performance

As explained above, the OTTY Natural Origin was surprisingly deep and sat quite high when on my bed base. I actually had to buy new bed sheets because of its depth, so you might want to check if your sheets will fit the mattress – I tried a double size, so you might find it tricky to find king or super king size sheets to fit it.

Aside from the height and depth, I found sleeping on the OTTY Natural Origin to be a positive experience. While it’s stated to be medium-firm, the OTTY Natural Origin is definitely on the firmer side so it might take you a while to get used to. Its construction felt premium and supportive, and while it moved nicely with my body when I rolled over, it didn’t mould to me like you get with a memory foam mattress.

If you like firm support, then you’ll definitely like the OTTY Natural Origin as it kept my spine and other body parts aligned and I experienced no aches and pains while sleeping on it. It’s also extremely comfortable from head to toe, and the wool felt and other breathable layers definitely paid off as it wasn’t too hot or cold. I especially appreciated the temperature regulation as I tested it during a rare UK heatwave!

While the OTTY Natural Origin doesn’t move or shift around with you or on the bed base, I thought that the edge support wasn’t as impressive as the rest of the mattress. It dipped a bit dramatically when I got close to the edge and when I sat on the edge of it, so that’s something that could be improved.

OTTY Natural Origin review: verdict

The OTTY Natural Origin is pretty hard to fault, especially if you like high, deep and firm mattresses. The premium, natural materials felt great on my body and worked well together to offer high levels of support, comfort and temperature control. While the edge support could do with some work, and I felt that the firmness might not be for everyone, the OTTY Natural Origin scores highly due to excelling in other important sleep areas – and it’s not badly priced, either.

OTTY Natural Origin review: alternatives to consider

If you’re an OTTY fan but fancy a different mattress, the OTTY Pure is made of bamboo and charcoal materials which offers a good amount of support and breathability.

The Panda London Hybrid Bamboo Mattress uses similar materials, particularly bamboo which is hypoallergenic and also has a medium-firm feel.

Another impressive eco-friendly mattress is the Simba Earth Apex. It’s more expensive than the OTTY Natural Origin and it has the similar deep sheets problem. However, it uses all-natural materials, including six layers of wool and is seriously comfortable.
