Two other teams in addition to the Los Angeles Rams were interested in Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline, general manager George Paton confirmed Tuesday.
Denver chose Lose Angeles in part because they’re 7-1 and a “great franchise,” which presumably means the two other teams weren’t contenders, at least not to the extent that the Rams appear to be.
“The main thing I communicated to Von is this is a win-win,” Paton said. “We could have moved Von somewhere else, but we wouldn’t do that. We wanted to do right by Von. We sent him to a great franchise, and a team right in the thick of it. He’s really going to fit in there and really help with the second part of his career.”
Paton even said that if they weren’t able to find the “right” fit for Miller, the Broncos would have kept him.
“He’s done right by us for 11 years, and we were going to do right. Otherwise, we weren’t going to trade him. We were going to keep him.”
Miller will now have a legitimate chance to compete for a Super Bowl, playing under Sean McVay in a defense that already featured star defenders Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey.
“We wanted to send him to a winning franchise with a great head coach, with a top-notch defense, and we were able to accomplish that.”
