Four people were killed and 51 others injured after a woman crashed into a crowd during homecoming ceremonies at Oklahoma State University on Saturday.
Acadia Chambers, 25, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after the tragic incident. However her attorney Tony Coleman told NBC's "Today Show" that he believes his client was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol but suffering from a mental illness.
“Her responses to my questions, her reactions to the information that I supplied her with, led me to be concerned about her capacity, her competency at this point,” he said, after spending nearly an hour with Ms Chambers.
Stillwater Police Captain Kyle Gibbs told ABC News' "Good Morning America" that 17 victims remain hospitalised and five remain in critical condition.
Police say that the suspect's vehicle was not a part of the parade. Police say that Ms Chambers drove through several barriers before hitting a police motorcycle before crashing into a crowd of bystanders at 10:30am. Officials would later identify the victims as Nakita Prabhaker, 23, of Edmund and Bonnie Stone, 65, Marvin Stone, 65, and 2-year-old Nash Lucas, who were all Stillwater residents, the Associated Press reported.
Ms Chambers is currently being held at the Payne County jail on four charges of second-degree murder. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
