Ospreys expect citing probe over Gareth Anscombe incident as Wales star forced off in obvious pain

The Ospreys expect the citing officer to take a look at the incident that left their fly-half Gareth Anscombe with rib damage during the clash with Glasgow Warriors in Swansea.

The Wales international had to leave the field on 47 minutes in the United Rugby Championship date at the Swansea.com Stadium, Glasgow's replacement hooker George Turner having charged into him at a ruck.

Anscombe needed on-pitch treatment before exiting in obvious pain.

Ospreys won the match 32-17 with a try bonus point, but there was concern afterwards over what had happened to their No. 10, with the Welsh team intending to check to see whether there was any foul play.

Their head coach Toby Booth said: “I am going to have a look at that because he is in a prone position. It was a dead ball and he can't see it coming, so we need to just see what that looks like.

"It is the most disappointing side of it but Gareth is a tough nut and he will get back pretty quickly. I am going a little bit off what was happening but you never like to see a player leave the pitch in that manner.

"We will have a look at it, the citing officer I am sure will have a look at it and it is out of our hands.”

The Ospreys have Jack Walsh and Stephen Myler as fly-half options, with Walsh coming onto the pitch to help steer the hosts past the winning post in round three of the URC.

Anscombe’s knock will also be a worry for Wales head coach Wayne Pivac ahead of his side’s autumn series. Leon Brown and Liam Williams are definitely out of the November programme of Tests, with Josh Navidi and Alex Cuthbert doubtful.

The star of the show for Booth’s team was wing Keelan Giles, who scored two picture-book tries and had another effort denied after a knock-on.

It was the second successive week for him to notch a touchdown double after his brace against the Lions, and there is a case for seeing him as Welsh rugby’s in-form wing.

“He has been very good all year," said Booth. "We have spent a long time putting him back together and Chris Towers and Simon Church (Ospreys medic) and their respective departments should take a lot of credit for that.

"We have been building him up slowly with 50 or 60 minutes now he’s able to produce 80-minute performances with such impactful moments.

"Moments like that win matches and you need quality. He has always been talented but now his body has caught back up, that's great for him and for us.

“He has an eye for an opportunity.”
