An armed student has been shot by a police officer at a high school in Wisconsin.

The shooting broke out at Oshkosh West High School at about 11am local time on Tuesday, Oshkosh Police Department said.

The pupil, who is said to have been armed with "a weapon", was confronted by the school resource officer. Both were injured and rushed to local hospitals, the force said.

Police did not specify what type of weapon the student was carrying.

The school was put on lockdown as parents were reunited with their children at nearby Perry Tipler Middle School.

In a statement on Facebook, Oshkosh Police Department said: "There has been an officer involved shooting at Oshkosh West high school.

"The school is currently locked down and parents can be reunited with their children at Perry Tipler Middle school.

"A student was armed with a weapon and confronted a school resource officer.

"The student and officer were both injured and transported to local hospitals. Only one student was injured."

The force added that the incident has been turned over to the State Bureau for Criminal Investigations.

"There will be more information released as it becomes available," they added.

The shooting took place just 90 miles away from a shooting at another high school, which happened on Monday.
