Oscars viewers baffled over live-action Pinocchio film that 'no one knew about'

Oscars viewers were left baffled after they discovered that a live-action version of "Pinocchio" was released.

The story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet who wants to be a real boy, has been retold numerous times since the book was published in 1883 by Italian author Carlo Collodi.

In 2019, director Matteo Garrone's live-action adaption of the film, featuring Italian actor Roberto Benigni, was released, and after receiving critical acclaim in its native country, it eventually secured a release date in the US in 2020.

This resulted in it attracting two nominations at the Oscars, one for Best Costume Design and another for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

But when the film appeared on screen during the ceremony, viewers were baffled, as, according to Twitter, not a lot of people knew that the new film even existed.

One person said: "Just found out they made a live-action Pinocchio movie this year and it will haunt my dreams."

Another said: "Pinocchio had a live-action movie?!?!?!?!"

The film has received a number of awards (Still)

"2020 was so f***ing wild that they literally made a live-action Pinocchio movie and none of us even knew about it," quipped a third.

Someone else asked: "When did they slip a new Pinocchio past me?"

And: "This whole Pinocchio live-action film feels like a reverse Mandela effect where it happened but we all don’t believe it did," wrote another confused Twitter user.

The film was nominated for a 2021 Art Directors Guild award for excellence in production design for a fantasy film and a 2021 BAFTA Award for hair and makeup.

It also previously received five awards at the 2020 David di Donatello Awards and won six, plus a special mention, at the Nastro d'Argento Awards.
