Kevin Hart statue appears near Oscars 2019 venue of comedian holding rainbow flag

A life-size statue of Kevin Hart holding a rainbow flag has been put up near the Oscars venue as protests over the comedian's original appointment as presenter for the Academy Awards continue.

Hart had to step down shortly after being named as host of tonight's ceremony when historic tweets containeing offensive language aimed at the LGBTQ community from between 2009 and 2011 resurfaced.

He admitted they were insensitive and he had hurt people, but the base of the statue near the Dolby Theatre is inscribed with the words Hollow Apology.

Street artist Plastic Jesus has taken responsibility for the statue, and told Artnet: “Sadly, this year with the current feeling and rhetoric within the US, it seems that it’s now acceptable again to hate someone because of their sexual orientation.”

The controversy over Hart has meant this year's Oscars is going ahead without a host for the first time in three decades. However the Academy has recruited a star-studded array of presentersimage to announce the awards, including Daniel Craig, Jennifer Lopez and Samuel L. Jackson.

Oscars 2019 Red Carpet arrivals

When the 39-year-old stepped down from the role, he said he “sincerely” apologised for his “insensitive” remarks.

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars…. This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists,” he said.

“I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.

“I’m sorry that I hurt people… I am evolving and want to continue to do so. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”
