Nominees for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony will not be allowed to attend via video chat, it has been revealed.

With the world still in the throes of a pandemic, other awards ceremonies, including the recent Golden Globes, have allowed nominees to attend digitally, over video chat services such as Zoom.

However, for the Oscars, measures have been put in place to ensure that nominees can attend safely.

The 93rd Oscars ceremony will take place on 25 April in Los Angeles’ Union Station, with part of the ceremony also being held in the regular Dolby Theatre venue.

Deadline published a letter sent to this year’s nominees from the show’s producers, which reads: “For those of you unable to attend because of scheduling or continued uneasiness about traveling, we want you to know there will not be an option to Zoom in for the show.

“We are going to great lengths to provide a safe and ENJOYABLE evening for all of you in person, as well as for all the millions of film fans around the world, and we feel the virtual thing will diminish those efforts.”

If nominees are unable to attend in person, the Academy will accept the award on their behalf.

The Oscars were delayed by roughly two months from their usual late-February date because of the pandemic, with the nominations being revealed just last week.
