Oscars 2021: Promising Young Woman directed by Wiltshire actress up for five awards

A film directed by an actress and writer with links to Wiltshire is up for five awards at this year’s Oscars.

Emerald Fennell, who directed the 2020 feminist thriller Promising Young Woman, is up for Best Director, while her film is in the running for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Carey Mulligan, who plays protagonist Cassie in the film, is also a contender for Best Actress.

And it turns out Emerald, daughter of celebrity jewellery designer Theo Fennell, has links to the West Country having studied courses at Marlborough College in Wiltshire before rising to fame.

It's the same boarding school that was attended by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, too.

It’s understood Emerald, after studying at Marlborough, read English at Oxford where she was discovered by an agent while acting in plays.

She soon bagged her breakout role as Patsy in Call the Midwife, and after quitting the show in 2017, wrote series two of Killing Eve, taking over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge when she left to co-write the latest Bond movie.

Emerald then went on to star as Camilla in The Crown, before switching to directing.

Promising Young Woman, which follows a traumatised barista who takes revenge on men who prey on girls after dark, is Emerald’s directing debut.

As well as Oscars the film was also nominated for three awards each at the BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes.

And it's not the only film with Wiltshire links to be nominated for an Oscar this year.

Period comedy drama Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has been nominated for makeup and hairstyling at this year's awards.

Filming locations for the 2020 film included Wilton House near Salisbury as well as Chavenage House in Gloucestershire.

When are the Oscars and how can I watch?

The 93rd Academy Awards are taking place this Sunday (April 25) in LA, starting at 1am on April 26 UK time.

You can follow the ceremony live on Sky Cinema’s Oscars channel.

It's understood there will also be a live stream on YouTube of the event by E! News.
