Oscars 2019: Rami Malek wins Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody portrayal of Freddie Mercury

Rami Malek has won Best Actor at this year’s Oscars.

The 37-year-old actor won for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Malek saw off competition from A Star is Born‘s Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) and Vice star Christian Bale.

Earlier in the evening, Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role in The Favourite while Bohemian Rhapsody collected awards for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Editing. The Best Picture Oscar went to Green Book.

While the film was well received by audiences, it was mauled by critics. “This karaoke-style paean is all style, no soul,” said The Independent‘s critic Clarisse Loughrey.

Mike Myers – who appears in the film - dropped in to introduce the Best Picture nominee alongside Dana Carvey in a Wayne’s World reunion. The two actors used the Queen track “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the 1992 comedy.

Elsewhere, Green Book star Mahershala Ali won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor while Regina King won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.

Marvel blockbuster Black Panther made history as Ruth Carter and Hannah Beachler became the first black winners in the category of Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, respectively.
