Oscars 2016: Bette Midler weighs into #OscarsSoWhite hours before ceremony starts

Bette Midler has weighed into the #OscarsSoWhite controversy hours before the ceremony begins.

The furore over the lack of diversity in the nominations for the Academy Awards has dominated the build up of this year’s ceremony after not a single non-white actor was nominated for the second year running.

High-profile actors and directors including Jada Pinkett-Smith, Will Smith and Spike Lee have all pledged to boycott the awards while many others have spoken out.

Just a few hours before the stars begun lining up on the red carpet, Midler, who has won Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys and Tony awards during her five-decade career, gave her thoughts on the matter to her 861,000 followers on Twitter.

The 70-year-old singer commented on both the reaction to Leonardo DiCaprio’s highly-expected win this year after being nominated five times before and the lack of diverse candidates nominated in this year’s ceremony.

The tweet has been liked over 14,000 times and re-tweeted over 13,000 times.
