Oscars: 20 animated features submitted for consideration

Nov. 04--Twenty films have been submitted for consideration in this year's animated feature Oscar category, a large and diverse group that could potentially be winnowed down to five.

According to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rules, the size of the animated feature category fluctuates depending on how many animated films are released in a given year -- at least 16 animated features must be released for there to be five nominees.

This year's group is a mix of large American studio pictures such as Disney Animation's "Big Hero 6," DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and Warner Bros.' "The Lego Movie," as well as smaller, foreign entries such as Ireland's "The Song of the Sea," Japan's "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" and the French/Belgian "Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants."

According to the academy, several of the films have not yet completed their required Los Angeles theatrical runs.

The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Jan. 15 at 5:30 a.m. Pacific time.

The Oscars will be held on Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network.
