Oscar-winner Thomas Vinterberg breaks down in tribute to daughter killed by texting driver

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg's Oscars win was tinged with sadness as he explained he wanted to include his daughter in the project before her death.

The 51-year-old director, who has also made The Hunt, struggled to contain his emotions and broke down in tears as he delivered his acceptance speech at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday night.

He landed the Best International Feature Film award for his film about alcohol and sobriety Another Round – filmed in Danish.

Dedicating his win, Thomas explained that his 19-year-old daughter Ida had died in a car accident when filming the project had only just got underway.

He had intended to include Ida in his film, by filming in her former school and to include her and her friends as some extras.

He said: “We wanted to make a film that celebrates life. Four days into shooting, the impossible happened.

"An accident on the highway took my daughter away. Someone looking into a cell phone. I miss her and I love her.”

He continued: “We ended up making this movie for her as a monument. Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you’re part of this miracle.

"Maybe you’ve been pulling some strings somewhere, but this one’s for you.”

Opening up about his daughter, Thomas shared how proud she had been of him.

He said: “She sent me a letter and she just read the script and was glowing with excitement.

“She loved this and felt seen by this and she was supposed to be in this. If anyone dares to believe that she’s here with us somehow, you’ll be able to see her clapping and cheering with us.”

Another Round stars Mads Mikkelsen as a teacher who decides to experiment if drinking at work can improve performance.
