Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne will return to the London stage this November in a production of the classic musical Cabaret.

The actor will play The Emcee alongside Jessie Buckley as Sally Bowles in the show set in the fictional Kit Kat Club - a seedy cabaret venue in pre-war Berlin.

The hit musical, famously made into a film starring Liza Minnelli as the cabaret singer Sally, was inspired by the novels of English writer Christopher Isherwood based on his own experiences in the German capital as the Nazis rose to power.

Director Rebecca Frecknall said: “It’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to direct Cabaret, a show that has always been dear to my heart. It’s thrilling to be able to approach this classic and important musical at a time when its themes and atmosphere feel so contemporary and resonant.

“I’m in awe of my incredible creative team who have come together to create a bold new production as well as a new ‘Kit Kat Club’, a bespoke home where we can truly embrace and unlock the world of Cabaret for a new audience”.

Redmayne’s stage career includes major roles at the Donmar Warehouse and his return to the stage comes 17 years after he won the Outstanding Newcomer award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance in Edward Albee’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?

Buckley was recently seen in the National Theatre’s acclaimed film of Romeo and Juliet which was made when the originally planned stage production was cancelled in lockdown.
