Oscar Peterson: Exclusively for My Friends review – intimate settings for a jazz master

Autumn seems now to be box set time in the jazz business, and this is one of the most lavish so far. Beginning in 1963, Peterson recorded a series of albums at the Black Forest home of jazz-loving millionaire Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer. Performing with his trio, on a superb piano, for a small invited audience, he surpasses himself. Away from the pressure of the concert hall his playing seems to expand, lingering slightly longer over details and taking occasional risks. The warm and intimate atmosphere comes across very strongly, too, especially in the solo set entitled My Favourite Instrument. In addition to the original six albums, there are two CDs of mainly unreleased material and a 60-page booklet.
