The 2026 Oscars nominations have been announced in Hollywood, with Sinners and One Battle After Another leading the crop.
Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman revealed the latest round of nominations, which saw Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners become the most recognised film of all time. It received 16 nominations, exceeding the record of 14 previously held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016),
Following close behind were One Battle After Another, with 13, and Joachim Trier’s Norwegian film Sentimental Value, Marty Supreme, starring Timothee Chalamet, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which received nine each.
Chloé Zhao’s weepie Hamnet garnered eight nominations, including Best Actress for Irish star Jessie Buckley.
Chalamet’s recognition in the Best Actor category saw him become the youngest actor to receive three nominations in the category since Marlon Brando in 1954.
Meanwhile, snubs included Chase Infiniti, who was tipped for a Best Actress nomination for One Battle After Another, Paul Mescal for his supporting turn in Hamnet and del Toro in Directing.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on 15 March, hosted by Conan O’Brien.

Marty Supreme is powder keg of a ping-pong movie that confirms Timothée Chalamet as one of our greatest talents.
Here’s our review of the film that has made the 30-year-old the hot favorite to win Best Actor this year:

Marty Supreme confirms Timothée Chalamet as one of our greatest talents – review
There was widespread shock today when Joseph Kosinski’s formulaic Formula 1 blockbuster F1 followed in the high-octane slipstream of his last film Top Gun: Maverick and ended up nominated for the most prestigious prize the Oscars have to offer.
Here, I argue that in their rush to venerate box office achievement, the Academy has forgotten what the Best Picture award is really about:

F1 shocks with Best Picture Oscar nod - here’s what should be on the podium instead
Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley has opened up about the mixed feelings of being nominated for Best Actress while her co-star Paul Mescal was overlooked in the Best Supporting Actor category.
“Yeah, look, I think he’s extraordinary in this film,” Buckley told The Hollywood Reporter. “I know I’ve met a partner for life in doing this with him. I don’t know what to say apart from he is, to me, my absolute. His artistry is something that will continue to grow and be a theme in so many different ways.”
She continued: “I know what we created together is something that’s so special to us, and I hold that so dearly in my heart, and there’s no part of Agnes that exists without Paul. There’s no part of what I created or what we created in this story which exists without Paul and what he poured into this story. So what is recognized belongs to him as much as him being recognized in his own category would.”
Meanwhile, not everyone was convinced by the drama about Shakespeare’s family. Here’s Patrick Sproull on why he found the film artificial and manipulative:

Ignore the awards – Hamnet is artificial and manipulative Shakespeare fan fiction
He may have been overlooked in the Best Picture category, but Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi will be celebrating his nomination in the Best International Film category.
He spoke to Adam White in December:

This is Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. He was sentenced to jail after this interview
Sentimental Value star Stellan Skarsgard has reflected on his Oscar nomination, which comes four years after he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2022.
Asked by Deadline whether the nod has helped him feel that things are back on track, he responded: “Yeah of course it has. I had a lot of doubts after the stroke.
“I did the second season of Andor and I did the second Dune afterwards. it was like balancing on a knife edge because I had to have a new way of working with prompters and stuff… I’m still working on it.
“But I’m glad that the core of the acting, the important thing, the essence of it, obviously survived.”
Sinners may have earned a record number of nominations, but the bookies still consider One Battle After Another the firm favorite to win Best Picture.
Here’s our critic Clarisse Loughrey exploring why in her five-star review:

One Battle After Another is a ferocious masterpiece – review
Today, Timothée Chalamet became the youngest actor since Marlon Brando to receive three Best Actor nominations at the Academy Awards.
The actor’s new role as ping-pong prodigy Marty Mauser has seen him emerge as the Best Actor frontrunner this awards season, and he’s already bagged a win at the Golden Globes.
It’s a watershed moment for a star whose ascendant career has not been without its teething issues, writes Xan Brooks:

Timothée Supreme: How Chalamet finally escaped boy-next-door purgatory
Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley is considered the comfortable frontrunner to win Best Actress at this year’s Oscars, but it wasn’t so long ago she was starring in one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s reality shows.
Katie Rosseinsky charts her rise from being body shamed in the “messed-up world of reality TV” to becoming the toast of Hollywood:

As was widely predicted, Teyana Taylor received her first Oscar nomination today for her supporting role in One Battle After Another.
Impressively, she’s also up for a Grammy next month.

Ryan Coogler has commented that his film Sinners receiving 16 Oscar nominations is “pretty crazy.”
The impressive haul breaks the record for nominations, placing it ahead of awards-dominating films like All About Eve, La La Land and Titanic.
Speaking to Deadline, Coogler remained modest and said: “I did not have any expectations when it came to the recognition of what they [the team] did.
“For me, people just showing up to the movies and having a good time, that would’ve been enough. That is worth all the effort. But that people would consider the craft and the achievements that went into it individually. It’s so rewarding.”
Sentimental Value picked up acting nominations for all four of its lead cast members - yet somehow wasn’t nominated for Best Casting.
Late last year, Annabel Nugent spoke to Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning about making Joachim Trier’s powerful family drama:

Stellan Skarsgård on Sentimental Value: ‘Truthfully, you can never be a good parent’
In defence of Kate Hudson’s shocking Oscar nomination
16:18 , Kevin PerryYes, Chase Infiniti, Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Lawrence warranted slots in the fiercely competitive Best Actress category, too – but the perennially underrated ‘Almost Famous’ star doesn’t deserve to have metaphorical fruits and vegetables thrown at her.
Here’s The Independent’s Adam White arguing why:

Remember last year’s festival season, when everyone predicted Dwayne Johnson would get an Oscar nomination for his role in The Smashing Machine? Well, that very much didn’t happen. The film received just one nod, for Makeup and Hairstyling.
Meanwhile, director Benny Safdie’s brother Josh Safdie received a Best Director nomination for his film, Marty Supreme, which amassed nine in total. Let’s hope the gloating is kept to a minimum.

With his nomination for Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet has become the youngest actor since Marlon Brando to receive three Best Actor nods.
Both actors were 30 when they reached the milestone; Chalamet previously starred in Call Me By Your Name and A Complete Unknown, while Brando got his nominations for A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata! and Julius Caesar.

Been seeing quite a bit of grumbling about F1’s Best Picture nomination.
The Brad Pitt racing thriller certainly wasn’t to everyone’s taste: in a two-star review last year, The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey likened it to a bad version of Top Gun: Maverick.

Brad Pitt vanity project F1 is just a bad version of Top Gun: Maverick – review
Iranian film It Was Just an Accident is in the running for two major awards: Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay.
The Independent spoke to its director, Jafar Panahi, last month.

I’m sure after today a lot of people who somehow missed it will be wanting to see what the fuss is about Sinners – here’s how to watch it:

Where to watch Sinners as Michael B Jordan film makes Oscars history
Despite Sinners’ record-breaking nominations, bookmakers still have One Battle After Another as the firm favourite to win Best Picture, with odds around 1/7.
Hamnet is deemed the biggest competitor, though bookies are still viewing this as a distant possibility. How this will change over the coming weeks remains to be seen...
Good things come to those who wait?
There were a staggering 40 years between Amy Madigan’s first acting nomination, for the 1985 drama Twice in a Lifetime, and her second, just now for Weapons.
It’s only just shy of the record, held by Judd Hirsch, whose nominations for Ordinary People and The Fablemans came 42 years apart.
Sentimental Value secured an impressive nine nominations, including a mighty four acting nods.
All four nominated stars – and director Joachim Trier, also nominated – spoke to The Independent last month:

Stellan Skarsgård on Sentimental Value: ‘Truthfully, you can never be a good parent’
Wicked: For Good was utterly shut out this year, just 12 months after the first Wicked was right in the thick of things.
Then again, if you’d read the reviews, maybe that should come as no surprise...

Now fully updated: a list of all the nominees for the 2026 Oscars!

Ruth E Carter received her fifth Oscar nomination, for her costume design work on Sinners, a feat that makes her the most nominated Black woman in Academy Awards history.
She was previously tied with actor Viola Davis, who has four nominations.

Sinners makes Oscars history with record number of nominations
Lots of people cheering the nomination for Delroy Lindo, up for Best Supporting Actor for Sinners.
Speaking to The Independent last month, Lindo said: “When you have people constantly talking about [an Oscar nomination], of course it becomes much more present in the consciousness. It is a dynamic that one has to navigate. But without sounding coy… the job remains to focus on the work as much as possible.”
“It’s hard to talk about this, man,” he adds, “but I want to stay focused on working, and quality of work, as much as possible. Because in the final analysis that’s the barometer by which one will be ‘judged’.”

ITV have just now announced that ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV Player will be the exclusive UK broadcaster for the Oscars for the third year running.
The ceremony will take place in March – and if today’s nominations are anything to go by, it could be shaping up to be a big night for Sinners.
F1 gets unexpected Best Picture nod
14:06 , Jacob StolworthyIn a twist that proves you should never doubt the crowdpleasers, F1 – the Brad Pitt blockbuster – swerved into the Oscars race, receiving a surprise Best Picture nomination.
Why is this a surprise? Mainly because nobody was really predicting it. But there have been rumblings that screenings held for voters in recent months have been receiving positive responses. So there we go.

Sinners breaks Oscar nomination record
13:56 , Jacob StolworthyWell, let’s let the dust settle a bit there.

Who are announcing this year's Oscar nominations?
13:32 , Jacob StolworthyThat would be actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman.
Pacemaker star Brooks was nominated in 2024 for her role in The Color Purple while Pullman is best known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and last year’s Marvel film Thunderbolts. And yes, his dad is Bill Pullman.

Here we go
13:31 , Jacob StolworthyWe have some preamble from the Academy’s president, but the nominations will be announced imminently. We have you covered
The rise of Jessie Buckley
13:00 , Jacob StolworthyLove or hate Hamnet, the rise of lead star Jessie Buckley is something to behold. She’s come a long way since launching to fame on Andrew Lloyd Webber reality show I’d Do Anything in 2008...

How Jessie Buckley went from an Andrew Lloyd Webber reality show to Oscar hopeful
FIVE MINUTES TO GO
12:44 , Jacob StolworthyUntil you can celebrate your favourite nominations and get ridiculously angry about the inevitable snubs. Bring it on.
Let's hear it for Teyana Taylor
12:02 , Jacob StolworthyThe 35-year-old Golden Globe winner could also take home a Grammy and an Oscar this year. Kevin EG Perry looks back on the unlikely origins of her career as Beyoncé’s teenage dance instructor.

Sinners could break Oscars record
11:40 , Jacob StolworthySinners could well break the record for most nominations in Oscars history.
The record of 14 is currently held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016), but Ryan Coogler’s vampire film could exceed that with multiple nominations in the Original Song category.
Surprise Best Picture contender?
11:20 , Jacob StolworthyThe Oscars are increasingly recognising films that struck a chord at the box office – and one such release that is said to have been warmly received by voters is F1.
Could it swerve into the race later today?
Best Picture nominations
11:00 , Jacob StolworthyI’m gonna throw it out there: I think this could be the best year in a long while for Best Pic noms.
Here’s our prediction:
Bugonia
Frankenstein
Hamnet
It Was Just an Accident
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another (this will win)
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
Sinners
Train Dreams

Is Hamnet as good as people say?
10:49 , Jacob StolworthyNot everyone likes it. Chloé Zhao’s tale of grief might be about to get a bunch of nods, but some people think it’s less a masterpiece than a blunt spade designed to whack you over the head until you weep from the pain.
Patrick Sproull writes

Ignore the awards – Hamnet is artificial and manipulative Shakespeare fan fiction
Best Director predictions
10:40 , Jacob StolworthyIt’s wild that Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread) has never won an Oscar before. That will change in March.
Here’s our predictions for who’ll be joining him in this particular category:
Ryan Coogler – Sinners
Gullermo del Toro – Frankenstein (the Academy LOVES him)
Joachim Trier – Sentimental Value
Chloé Zhao – Hamnet
Best Actor predictions
10:20 , Jacob StolworthyThis is a two-horse race between Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Wagner Moura for Brazilian film The Secret Agent.
Michael B Jordan will deservedly be nominated for his role as twins in Sinners and, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio will be there for One Battle After Another.
That fifth nomination is more uncertain, but it’s out of Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) and Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams).

Best Actress predictions
10:00 , Jacob StolworthyThis is the category that is essentially already decided – Hamnet star Jessie Buckley’s name may as well be carved on that trophy right now.
But who’ll be joining her in the category remains to be seen. There are options for a few snubs here (Amanda Seyfried – The Testament of Ann Lee, Tessa Thompson – Hedda , Jennifer Lawrence – Die, My Love ), and the below is our prediction of who will join Buckley:
Rose Byrne – If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Chase Infiniti – One Battle After Another
Renate Reinsve – Sentimental Value
Emma Stone – Bugonia
Best Supporting Actor predictions
09:40 , Jacob StolworthyToday will mark Stellan Skarsgård’s first-ever Oscar nomination; it’s about time. With any luck, he’ll win for his role in Sentimental Value.
Elsewhere, the One Battle boys Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn will likely show up – and we’re hoping to see Sinners rising star Miles Caton, too. For that to happen, Paul Mescal will have to miss for Hamnet, because the fourth slot is going to Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein.
Sadly, it seems Adam Sandler will miss for his charming turn in Jay Kelly. One day, Adam!

Best Supporting Actress predictions
09:20 , Jacob StolworthyOne Battle After Another’s Teyana Taylor looks set to win this category, so expect a nomination – and it’ll be great (if somewhat bizarre) to see Amy Madigan honoured for the fearsome Aunt Gladys in Weapons.
Rounding out our predictions are:
Odessa A’zion – Marty Supreme (this would be a welcome surprise)
Ariana Grande – Wicked: For Good
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas – Sentimental Value
Wunmi Mosaku – Sinners

Timothée Chalamet is about to match Brando record
08:40 , Jacob StolworthyIf (when) Timothée Chalamet receives his third Best Actor nomination today, he’ll become the youngest actor to have done so since Marlon Brando in 1954.
The Marty Supreme star was previously nominated for Call Me by Your Name and Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.
Amanda Seyfried says winning an Oscar 'isn't necessary'
08:20 , Jacob StolworthyAmanda Seyfried is in the running for an Oscar nomination for The Testament of Ann Lee – but receiving an award isn’t high up on her list of priorities.
“Do you remember who won in the past ten years?” she asked The New Yorker this week.
“Now, do I need one in a week or two or whenever? No, of course, I don't. Would it be great? Of course it would, for every reason – but it isn't necessary.”

Who are announcing this year's Oscar nominations?
07:58 , Jacob StolworthyThat would be actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman.
Pacemaker star Brooks was nominated in 2024 for her role in The Color Purple while Pullman is best known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and last year’s Marvel film Thunderbolts. And yes, his dad is Bill Pullman.

What Golden Globes told us about 2026 Oscars
07:15 , Jacob StolworthyThe Golden Globes took place earlier this month – and gave us our biggest indicator yet for what might win Oscars in March.
One Battle After Another, Sinners expected to sweep
07:05 , Jacob StolworthyThe films expected to receive the most nominations include One Battle After Another and Sinners, with Hamnet following close behind.
Sinners in particular could break the record for most nominations ever, surpassing the 14 amassed by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).

Oscar nominations to be announced in Hollywood
Wednesday 21 January 2026 16:14 , Jacob StolworthyActors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman are announcing this year’s noms on ABC's Good Morning America, as well as the Oscars YouTube channel, at 5:30am PT, which is 1.30pm GMT.
