Oscar nominations 2023: Paul Mescal, Colin Farrell and Kerry Condon among Irish Oscar nominees

The Oscar nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards were announced in LA this afternoon with Ireland raking in 12 nominations.

The event was hosted by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, accompanied by the usual gasps, cheers, snubs and surprises.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and televised live on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel will be returning to host the highly anticipated event.

Ireland received 12 nominations - with 10 going to the Banshees of Inisherin.

Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal have both been nominated for the Best Actor award at the Oscars with the latter getting the nod for his role in Aftersun.

The stakes were high for the Irish in a number of Oscar categories heading into the event, with endless buzz surrounding Martin McDonagh’s the Banshees of Inisherrin, with Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, also tipped for awards.

There is great news for Irish film fans as The Banshees of Inisherin was nominated in several categories along with several other Irish productions.

Martin McDonagh was nominated for best director for Banshees of Inisherin, which also got the nod for best picture, best original score, best film editing and for best original screenplay.

Normal people star Paul Mescal was nominated for a Best Actor award for his role in Aftersun while Women Talking star Jessie Buckley missed out in the supporting actress category.

Kerry Condon has been nominated for best supporting actress for her role in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan were both nominated for best supporting actor for Banshees.

An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl was nominated for best international feature film.

Northern Ireland production An Irish Goodbye has also been nominated for best live action short film.

Popular Irish-language drama An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) will be nominated for the Best International Feature Film category.

The Irish language flick picked up two Bafta nominations last week.
